ok water from aqua shop salt and pure
to do your own you need a some special equiptment around £80
a ro meter thingy
i buy mine for my 94 litre tank
once a week i take out a small bucket about 25%
add salt or pure whichever is needed
test with refracter meter to see if salt is low or not
make sure temp is the same as the tank water
and i always add new water to the back of my tank in sump bit
but you havant one so add carefully and slowly

also starting from scratch you can add your own salt
i would say rock then sand but i never started from scratch
so someone else may know this better than me.

so you will be able to sit and rock watch.... crazy
and see all the crawlies come out..lol affraid

yes cheers for that dekker lol

chers chez am off to the lfs today and find prices on all sorts lol

will probably pick up a power head today and the ro water and possibly sand a rock also need a refractometer and a test kit of the salty side might even buy 1kg of live rock to start the cycle (can be added this way cant it) lol

so will do my water test for gh and kh (cant think of any others lol)

so at the mo it is empty but a working progress lol

hob filter should be here tomorrow so that needs the hood altering and as it is plastic and i have a dremmel should be easy (famous last words lol)

the Single light i have at the min is this one

i still need the blue tube and need to fit it in properly to the hood should be simple

can you see any flaws in my ideas ?

i use this refracter. but it was expensive...........£29

Going salty + tank log - Page 2 6689_110

but you can get a plastic one but they say its not that accurate
but the man i bought my first set up off only used this and all was ok.

you need the blue light for 1hr morning and 1 hour at night
before lights on/off
i would think a blue stick on strips you can get should be ok
its so your corals start to open/close slowly before lights on/off
plus look nice of a evening.

you may need 2 power heads (i think i really need another)
one one side one other
also you need to break the surface water i have one of the filter outlets
facing top of tank.

good luck shopping, hope you have your cheque book Shocked

just got my self a nutrafin masters test kit £59 rrp got it for £29

so tested my tap water

ph 7.4
calcium < 20ppm
gh 40ppm
kh 20ppm
non-chelated iron 0ppm
chelated iron 0ppm
nitrate < 5ppm
ammonia 0ppm
nitrites 0ppm
phosphate 0ppm

which of these are important in going salty and what does ro water read on these just as a query ro water here is 10p per liter

what other tests do i need for this ?

the problem i have now is i have to fork out £40 for ro water fo the first time as i have to have the tubs as well and with a 30mile round trip to get the ro its a pain in the back side and gettonly ing 20 miles per gallon isnt fun lol

oh i have my sand and 1 of my power heads today
Going salty + tank log - Page 2 DSCF0014
Going salty + tank log - Page 2 DSCF0015

the power head is 900 lph Koralia nano have a second on order from ebay and have a hob external on its way as well as a refractometer http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&item=220231756651

just have to wait for the filter to arrive so i can mod the juwel hood to fit it in

looking good................

a black bag at a guess.. ??? Smile
or a good paint job.?

if using a black bag.
if you spread baby oil on it then smooth out with a credit card
it takes all the bubbles out.

ph suppose to be around 8.2 I think
but mine never has
Its always been lower,
and was told not to mess with chemestry,

starting up add your own marine salt you buy in a box,
but this isan't cheap either, instant marine salt water
it has a pic of clowns on the purple box add to normal tap water,
it tells you on the box.how much to add.
set everything going, then the waiting game and rock watching starts..lol
apparently I have read that marine tanks cycle alot faster than tropical.
some can take just a week.

pity you dont live nearer i have a full box.also a spare refractor.

the salt water I buy is usually at 22.
in my tank its at 24/25. just remember 28 is too high 21 too low
so do a bucket water change with pure.

mine is already warm when I get it,
but if its cold i stand it in kitchen to get to temp before adding
add slowly....
if its really cold i stand it at the front of the radiater
I find mine goes up with condensation.the little salt grains stick to the
inside of the lid, like crusty bits, then with the condensation
it must drop back in the tank causing the water to get more salty.
and remember where these fish originate from the tempreture only drops
gradully 1 degree in about 3 weeks,
and shock of cold water can kill......

although the marine fish we buy are tank bred, so never had the pleasure
of swimming around the tropical reefs.

you can do your own ro water but need to buy a unit that fits
on your cold water pipe.I think the unit is about £80 you can get these on ebay.
then add your own salt, and test.
im lucky my L.F.S is at the bottom of the road.
I beleive ro and salt water last's around 3 weeks kept in a dark place.

so once you have set up maybe just get your water when you are
out and about, and put in a dark place, till needed.

I do about 25% water change every week
I use a small bucket for this.and it takes 1 bucket.
but I only have 2 clowns 1 shrimp 3 snails and 3 hermit crabs

in your size tank I think you maybe get away with about 5-6 small fish
if you are getting clowns get 2 together and no more.....
as I have been told you buy a pr and thats it, or bully'ing starts.

when placing your live rock in think about how you place it.!!!
or you may find it awk'ward cleaning the glass,
you usually see the rock in a pyramid shape in the middle
and nearly to the top of the tank in the middle.
this helps to covers all the unsightly brown algae up
that clings to the back of the glass.

you might want to get a cover for the heater too
my snails slide up the heater.
you don't want to burn there feet.. ;o)
I have a rubber unbreakable one in both tanks.
on saying that the one in the marine is playing up now its at 82 Shocked
but I dont know if its the heater or the hot weather
or its gone like Elvis's. so may be taking them both back......

its expensive starting up isant it

good luck K hope this has helped a little.

Going salty + tank log - Page 2 Empty
PostSubject: Re: Going salty + tank log   Going salty + tank log - Page 2 Icon_minitimeThu Jun 25, 2009 6:25 pm

it was blackboard paint and i cant paint to save my life but it turned out tho lol

cheers chez

so if i was going for clowns i could only have clowns then or is it just 2 clowns max, was thinking a black and white clown and a orange and white clown as i was told you can mix them

i have not really looked at fish yet tbh as i am leaving the tank for 4-6 weeks to stablaize and make sure everything is stable befor i add fish but will be adding a cuc

the costly side of this all is going to be the live rock and its somthing you dont think is going to cost that much but it can be the most expensive side of the tank

i have been told that i can use tap water to fill the tank and then do water changes with ro water but not too sure if this is correct

the ro will cost me £40 to start for 80l leaving 10 liters of water (probaly more with displastion) for the first water change

i am unsure about going for corals as i am not sure about the lighting

the skimmer is looking to be a hard purchase due to the hood i have about 3" clearance above the water line in cirtain places but could alway mod the hood for this but i defo need an internal not an external

the hob (or should that be hos) filter should turn up today and i will update the pics when it is inplace this will have no sponges in as they can be nitrate harbours also this is 400l an hour so should be powerfull enought for the tank didnt want to go too big as then i will have far too much turn over

so at the mo i am looking at 1800 lph for the powerheads and 400lph filter giving me a total of 2200 lph in the tank should be fun to watch lol

just the lighting is confusing me cant under stand what i need

my lighting is built in
3 in all blues day light and sun light both on for full sunlight
I put the blues on 1 hr in morning before the others
and 1 hr evening before turning lot off

I Was told only the orange/white clowns together
or only the black ones.?
now I am not sure about this but I just have the 2 orange/white ones
yes you can get other fish. ie: goby's
simular size ones I should have at a guess.!!!

some corals like bright light some not so bright
my Duncans and the leather finger corals and poly'p's are all doing well
I would think they will be ok.

my live rock alone cost me £80 4 pieces

I have £160 worth of coral frags in there now

The tank was £180
+ powerhead + rubber heater
then there's the fish.
I Have decided when the clowns have gone im selling up
its not for me,

TOADSTOOL

Going salty + tank log - Page 2 Dscn0610

was looking at the Bubble anemone or the Ritteri (Maroon) anemone but will need to have a look at what is more suitable

so do clowns not just host which one you put in the tank then or do you have to put in a few and then remove the ones they dont host ?

is it worth starting the tank off with tap water or should i get the 4 barrels to start with although i will only use 1 barrel for w/c

i am going to use the t8 thats in my tank as it is a 10000k tube

do i only need the blue if i have corals or do i need them with anemone (just relised how they came up with nemo's name lol)

if im correct they need ALOT of lighting and are hard to keep alive the one thing i was told when i was going to convert into marine. was told this so i didnt go ahead with the marine as i wanted the same...clown fish in there.

also i would mix 2 different types of clowns jsut ncase they cross breed as they change sex the most dominant one becomes the female ( nothing changes there really does it ! )

my 2 don't host so one sleeps behind the live rock in a barnacle shell i put in
the other sleeps on its side on the very top of the water.

go with the tap water and salt if your not in a hurry.
it will be cheaper for you

I don't think you can mix black clowns with orange ones.?

clown can host anything/any coral/or anemone
it depends if they decide they can host my toadstool
but mine are greedy and idle..lol

lol i think i read on pfk it wasok to mix the colours as they are the same species and just a diferent colour so i dont know lol

i think i might give them a miss then lol

got my filter @ 12pm and have modded the hood to take it, this filter also comes with a surface skimmer, their not the same as a protein skimmer are they ?

will put up pics once i am happy with the look lol

right well as i said i got the filter today and am happy with the way it works and as it is black matches the tank lol, also keeps it off the floor out of my 2 year olds reach.

well i went and cut the hole in the hood for it
Going salty + tank log - Page 2 DSCF0030
Going salty + tank log - Page 2 DSCF0031

the light is built into the hood but i prised it off to see if i could modify it a little

Going salty + tank log - Page 2 DSCF0032

now i can go 2 ways with this
1) I remove the fittings completly and add a t5 starter for the sun light + t8 starter for the blue tube.
2) I can leave the current light in and add a moddified t8 starter for the blue and control it from 2 timers or just switches

with both ways it means drilling the plastic and fitting tube holders in and attaching the cables by drilling in the sides for the wires (not a major problem)
but what is a problem is heat what will generate the most heat t5's or t8's this is where i am stuck as i have no idea.

well this is the filter in place and the skimmer thing

Going salty + tank log - Page 2 DSCF0033

Going salty + tank log - Page 2 DSCF0036

Going salty + tank log - Page 2 DSCF0041

over all how do you think it is looking

just got to wait for the rest of the things in the post lol then we are cooking on gas , just have to wait for the refractometer from the states about 8 days hopefully then i can do my water, may know someone with a marine tank just up the road so they might be able to help with the ro water and might have a hydrometer or refractometer, but they are selling up for £350 also 3ft long and i dont have the space banghead

they will give me free critters with the live rock lol

i dont think they sell fish tbh (only spoke to them on the phone) and they dont have any on their website so i am guessing it is just the corals and live rock they sell and sps frags (dont know what that is lol)

going down tomorrow pay for the live rock and pick up the ro but pick the live rock up another day when i can hold temps and salinity stable
