Update

So, might as well give an update with whats going on with my tank now. You'll remember that I lost all of my fish because of a broken filter and I am now doing the fishless cycle .

well it's all going ok, I got some filter mush from the lfs (that confused them no end), and all is ticking along. Ammonia staying at about 3ppm and Nitrite 0.25 but that's ok.

I am making up a list of fish and will ask your thoghts later when it's finished, but I know I want Cherry shrimp in it - saw some in the lfs and they look great!

Can you get the ammonia up a bit closer to 5ppm then drop it back down to 2ppm when you've seen your nitrItes peak

It's funny when you get the LFS so confused, mine scratched his head soooo much when I attempted the 'adding ammonia' discussion. He understood it well enough but just said add some 'cycle' as it's live bacteria in a bottle! I left it at that really, lol

Was it a filter or heater problem ? am confused now lol
