Malc just brought a big fresh beef heart in from butchers
ive chopped the best of it up into small bits
cut off any bits of fat and given it a very very good wash
and give elvis about 4 bits he loved it.
bet he thought all his birthdays had come at once.
hes giving me the pathetic how deprived am I look
and please can I have some more elvis 48938 lol
some I have put in the freezer, for future treats.

the rest has gone to next door
they will boil it for max their dog
so he will love me forever too.lol
........................................

Just in case anyone reads this in the future
and thinking of getting a Oscar.
beef heart is ONLY given now and again as a treat.
its not to be fed as their everyday food.!!!

Jeez chez you are taking a risk there - with his teeth and love for fingers if he gets the taste for fresh meat you will never be able to put your hands in the tank ever again! affraid

What do you normally feed him on chez? Is he a meat and fish eater or do you give him lpellets mostly?

He'll be getting even bigger if you start giving him stuff like that you know - he'll be the cichlid equivalent of Marge or whatever her name is Smile

That is one impressive fish chez, really beautiful, but HUGE!

Chez, he's just a fish on jis own isn't he?

Do you think you get as much pleasure from having one fish as you would having a lot in a tank?

I am doing so much searching in the web and looking at other peoples choiced I don't know which way to do things, but must admit I like the look of that fella.

Elvis lol Smile

You need a big tank for an oscar - to be honest - Id say 5 foot tank is bare minimum for an oscar (or two)

You can actually buy beef heart fish flake chez if it makes life easier for you - all my fish get it quite regularly and ive had no issues with it.

thanks rich will look out for them
it will be alot easier.

smcm1
thank you.
I have had gold fish all my life as a kid from fairgrounds then (as you did back then)
I Had tropical fish. in the 80s
and although it was nice to see the different fish/colours,
I was fed up of them breeding.
ending up with 100's of guppies.lol
also I got fed up counting fish every morning,
making sure they all was still there.

I Honestly prefer 1 spices tank and knew I wanted one fish
when I got elvis
he was only about 2 inch 2 yrs ago when I got him,in
his little 18inch tank he looked lost in it,
but I Did read up on oscars, before getting him,
and knew how big he would grow,
and what personalities they have,
known as tank wreckers,robusk,
elvis has lived upto his oscar name.
he has wrecked his tank many times,
so he only has 2 pieces of heavy bogwood in there now.
we have even had to cover and protect the heater
with plastic builders pipe with holes drilled in
he attacks this alot.. Evil or Very Mad

Im glad I Did read up on them, as our L.f.s.
would have let me come home with about 4 of them, Mad

they are known to get to about 15inch and live around 15yrs
even my 50inch tank isan't big enough for him to be honest,
in a ideal world and I had the room I Would get a bigger one
I would love a conservetry with a big indoor pond in
this would be his home then.
with a cover over of course as hes a jumper.lol

he has great charecter, and if I had fed him out of my hand
from first getting him he would feed out of your hand,
or be able to stroke him
but after 2 nips off him I'm not that brave,
plus I Hate touching fish.
they are very greedy fish if you let them play the pity me im hungry card.lol

I do a 4 bucket of water change every week without fail
and when I pour the other back in catch any poop/floaters in the net
(getting good at this)
and this seems to be working ok for now.
the external Aqua1 filter was worth every penny.
the thin white filter in this at the top I Change about once every 3 months.
but never touch anything below this.

if a stranger comes in the room he either goes to the back of the tank
lays on his side and plays dead.
or he comes right to the front and opens his mouth which is very big.lol
and shows his teeth, I Think it dependes on what colour you are wearing.
he shows his teeth at me when I Wear very light colours mainly pink.

I personally wouldn't go back to a mixed tropical tank.
On saying that Elvis will be my last afterall he could out live me
then who will take such a big fish/tank over.

I Love Oscars there very hardy, usually don't have alot of medical problems
the only one i'm aware of in these fish is h.i.t.h (hole in the head)
this can be treated quickly by water changes
if you keep the water ok.then the fish should be ok.

if I Was younger and starting out and room for A BIG tank I would defanitly
get another oscar.

they don't scoot away scared when you go near them,(when they know you)
they come to the front of the glass and greet you.
ok its food they want, but its nice to be able to get right up close
and personal to them. they are really a wet pet, not just a fish lol

the spot lights are no longer in the tank
he didn't like them and pulled them off.

this is his 3rd tank as he got bigger I Got a bigger tank.
he also loves his ping pong balls to play with.
