i have a 85 litre tank how many inches of tropical fish can i put in it thanks for any replys

A rough rule for how many fish is 1" per gallon, and that's taking the adult size of the fish.
85litre is about 18UK gallons, so that's 18 adult inches of fish you could take.
I think I'm right in saying that there is a bit of give in this because it does depend on what filtration you have and that, but it gives some idea anyway.

best advice i can give it the surface area
i am lucky mine works out as if it is using the us gallon rule of 1" per g

Just remember that certain species have minimum tank size and volume requirements though e.g. your tank would be small for the likes of Bolivian Rams, large Gouramis sp., RTBS etc. Have a look at the Fish Breeds section for more info on the most popular species.
