I think you probably will need to prune it at times GD. I havent got any java fern so am not sure how quick it grows, but beieve it can make a good 'lawn' in the tank if left.

yeah, i used black so you couldnt see it, just tie it around the bodwood near the root of the plant and it will eventually root itself onto the bogwood with it being soft

it will only be over run if you let it be! If you're not the type of person to maintain your tank (ie cleaning the glass/gravel etc) it might be a problem, but if you're always re arranging and taking care of the appearance it shouldnt be an issue

PostSubject: Re: Tanks   Tanks - Page 3 Icon_minitimeWed Mar 26, 2008 7:48 am

SO....another experiment and hopefully this one will work. As some of you know i now have an 8 inch gibbi and a 6 inch scarlet plec with the undertanding they was going into the 400l tank with my P's (piranhas) but as my tiny baby oscars have now been eaten i was weary about putting in my gibbi (which i have grown from about an inch) and my scarlet which i love and cost me a lot of money, into my P tank.

So i figured if i buy a common plec of similar size and put him/her in and he's fine with the P's (and the most common fish to live with P's are plecs!) then the others will be. So far so good and they're not even battering an eyelid.

I hate to have to do this but the only other options are to get a bigger tank for my 2 plecs (the current one is 120l) but its upstairs so the floorboards will need to be strengthened OR leave my scarlet in the 120l and HAVE to re-home my gibbi when he gets a little bigger and i really dont want to have to do either. BUT if this doesnt work and they start to attack my new common plec then it'll have to be rehomes along with my gibbi Tanks - Page 3 Frown

UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE!!!!!!!!

Now all stock has been moved to where it's going to stay thought i'd give you all an update. I also planted some more plants in my little 54l seen as OH ANNOYING mollys have eaten mine!! They was doing really well as well Sad

BUT i bought an albino britslenose today for my little tank so Very Happy

TANK 1 (54l)
5 Nochu Blue Tetras
6 Rummy Nose Tetras
1 Oto
1 Dwarf Rainbow
1 Male Siamese Fighter
3 Dwarf Puffers
1 Albino Bristlenose

TANK 2 (124l)
1 Sailfin Plec
1 Scarlet Plec
4 Mollies
2 Swordtails
5 Corys (2 albino, 3 peppered)
1 female siamese fighter
2 glowlight tetras
3 x ray tetras
1 Spotted Climbing Perch

TANK 3 (400l)
6 Red Bellied Piranhas
5 Pearl Danios
1 Common plec

TANK 4 (35l) - coldwater
2 Pearlscales

Was debating on bristlenose or clown plec but i read clown plecs really need bogwood in their diet and i doubt i could fit it in my tank now, so got the albino bristlenose so she looks good with the black gravel i have in my tank. Finished tank pics will follow

phishy, aren't you overstocked on those smaller tanks or do you just over filtrate to compensate?

I know many people use the 1" per gallon rule but I dont know if that is as important if you have bags of filtration going on - what do you think? Very Happy

i know my 54l one is overstocked but im planning on getting another filter for it, 124l ones not really cos the plecs are going to be moved into the 400l one. The plecs are only in there temp

Do you think overcrowding leads to other problems phishy - aggression, things like that? I wouldnt mind adding a few more fish to my tank but dont want to cause problems.

definately not experienced any aggression fishfan. BUT if you only had the "required" amount of finsh in a tank you wouldnt really have any. As long as there's sufficient filteration and all stats are as they should be there's no problem what so ever with over crowding a fish tank PROVIDING that they're not fish that are going to be stunted in growth (eg a silver shark that would grow quite big may not be able to grow as big as it SHOULD cos of over crowding will not be good for the fish). If you have smallish fish anyway i dont see a problem.

Does that make sense?
