| Chez, I've just got a titanium one for my Oscar/Clarias tank, and just to be on the safe side a full length heater guard too. | |

| The titanium with digital thermostat sell for about £20-25 for a 300w on ebay (they are foreign but ok so far) I got this as not only do the big fish tend to be destructive but the clarias likes to sleep on the heater and gets burnt. | |

| PFK are giving away heaters with a subscription - another oscar proof solution could be one of those heaters that you fit to an external filter oputlet pipe (assuming you use external filter) | |

| Crikey, thank goodness you noticed. I've had three heaters fail on me in the past couple of years: - one got stuck on but luckily I noticed - one failed to come back on again after a water change so had to change it - one stopped working altogether, tank temp went down to 14C but alas, I never noticed and the guppies in there succumbed to the cold temperature Now, I make sure that I check the tanks as regularly as I can, at least every other day and I have an LCD strip on the front of each tank just to be sure. | |

| Ive gone through a few in two years as well - im seriously thinking of one of those external (in the hose) versions or one like they are giving away with PFK | |

| the other lesson is to have spares
It may seem madness to have a £30 'spare' heater sat in a box doing nothing - but as I found out (on good friday) its sods law that something fails on the least convenient day
I have to fess I only have 1 soare heater for my main tank and smaller tank (a 70liter tank supplied with a 150W heater is unusual)
Whilst not the same subject but related - this is one reason internals are slightly better than externals - less to worry about going wrong | |
