Sorry about this. Right, I have read all your comments, and WILL be doing the fishless cycle, although I desperately want fish! I have had the tank full of water and had the filter running for a week now, but have not added anything to start the bacteria building up. I kniow I am going to have to get ammonia but is it allright to keep this water in or do I have to change it and start with fresh water?

Well done hillsbent on making a good decision. Keep us up to date with how you are doing!

No you dont have to change the water before you start - you will have to do a huge water change after it anyway so may as well wait for then. Very Happy

Oh dont worry, you will be sick of seeing my name on the forum by the time it is finished!

Im ordering some ammonia from ebay so should get it next week.

Am I ok to turn the tank off till then or should I keep it running? I just think the water will get stale and not be ok to use?

I dont think there is any need to change it, although perhaps if you have to wait too long for it then I would change some of the water and put clean in and then start the cycling..

I dont know if it would be necessary, but I am just wondering whether adding some fresh water would add a bit of oxygen to the tank and help things along a bit, but to be honest that is not based on anything scientific
