PostSubject: Hi everyone!   Hi everyone! Icon_minitimeWed Oct 07, 2009 1:15 pm

Hi!
I'm pretty new to fish! I have a 12 gallon tank (all I have space for unfortunately) which is well planted. So far I have 6 danios - 3 zebra called Bibbity, Bobbity and Boo and 3 long finned called Tom, bibba and Harry, a pair of dwarf golden gourami that I bought this morning so have yet to be named, and 5 amano shrimp (called shrimp 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 since they look indentcle!). I did a fishless cycle beforehand which seems to have worked since the ammonia and nitrate are 0 and nitrite is low. Eventually, I'd love to get some hatchettfish, glass catfish and guppies at some point, but I'm going to leave it for a bit until the tank is more mature and don't want to over stock - what do people think? I'd also love a beta, but don't think it'd get on with the guppies.
I'm completely in love with my shrimp - they are soooo cute when they sit on my bog wood and wave! Its so exciting to actually have fish - has been a long wish of mine! I'm already hooked!
So, hello everyone! Hi everyone! 312933

Hi,

I actually meant honey dwarf gourami (not golden) - just getting confused!

Hiya Jen and welcome to TFF, good to have you here Smile

Well done on doing the fishless cycle but I would recommend that you do daily water changes until you get rid of any hint of nitrite - you really need to have zero readings for noth ammonia and nitrite, and a nitrate of less than 40.

You say it's a 12gallon, thats about 55 litre if we are talking UK gallons.

You might have problem keeping dwarf gourami's - although they dont grow ver big they are territorial and need at least a 3ft tank to give them room to establiish their own spaces. If you have 2 males they will fight each other to establish who is boss and so the weaker one needs room to escape too, and if you have a male and a female then the female will get harassed for sex.

It might be worth having a rethink about them and maybe taking one back. Sorry, I know it's hard to think of that but it's better for them. Have a look at the info Mary wrote here - https://tropicalfishfanatics.forumotion.com/anabantids-f56/dwarf-gourami-t41.htm

Thanks for the welcomes everyone!

As far as I can tell, a 3 ft tank is about 15 gallons on average so maybe it is a little small. I have a male and a female - I will keep an eye on them and consider re-homing if I have problems - thanks for the advice! If I were to re-home one, are they OK to be kept on their own?

I re-tested my water, it was my nitrite that was 0 and nitrate that was low (about 10) - just getting mixed up with the names! (Despite being a biologist of a sort, how embarrassing!). There's certainly a lot to keep track of, but I totally love my fish.

Will post pictures as soon as I get a new camera - mine was stolen Hi everyone! Icon_cry

Thanks again! Hi everyone! 491251

Hi everyone! 3199 to TFF wave

I'd say you're more or less fully stocked in your 12 Gallon so time for a second bigger tank, I think. Smile

Welcome to TFF - Dont worry, you dont have to be insane to get on here - but it helps Hi everyone! Icon_jokercolor

Welcome to TFF

Ok - Glass catfish - as they prefer to be kept in large groups - I dont
think your tank is going to be big enough - that aside - they need a
very stable environment and are very very prone to white spot - I
waited 2 years before getting mine - they are not big fish and not
overly active - but I think they prefer/need larger tanks simply
because such tanks are more 'stable' in terms of water quality.

If you want transparent fish - x-ray tetra will suit you Wink

Guppy (Gupsters in my book Very Happy) are great little characters - but the
gouramis may nip them to bits - as would tetras. They are
not very hardy these days - they were once beginners fish but are so
inbred and thus weak now that they are NOT beginners fish. They also
breed like rabbits on steroids and speed Very Happy so unless you want
literally hundreds of fish you or no one wants - keep only males or
females - males look nicer but are smaller - and they never reach their
full glory until females are around (like any male Very Happy). You could get a few and see how it goes.

Bettas - males anyway ime are better on their opwn in a small tank or
with a harem of female bettas. You could also have females only in a
group - but as youve said - theyll probably have a go at guppys. These
too are quite delicate fish.

I would suggest bronze coydora catfish - they are great little fish - do a good job of eating leftovers and not too demanding

There are hundreds of options - but I think most will agree when I say that alot of the smaller cichlids make good additions - great little characters - Rams (bolivian, blue, german etc) or dwarf cichlids, kribensis - lots of choices.

The vest thing to do is to read alot of books and or websites and get as much info as you can - then draw up a 'wish list' and base it on what you can keep in your tank - or ask us Very Happy

Hope this helps

PS - I hope its zero ammonia and zero nitrite you have with a smattering of nitrate - therwise your fish are in trouble

Thanks for the help! Yep, its zero ammonia and zero nitrite you have with a smattering of nitrate. Whats your thoughts on hatchett fish - I'm guessing my tank is too small?

Mary has some hatchetfish - can't remember in what size tank though! Have a read of this info (you can find more in the Fish Breed Information section) and it might help you Smile

Hatchets are 'interesting' as some are tough as old boots and others are delicate like crepe paper so the species you go for is important. Silver hatchets (ime) are fragile - but id suggest leaving off any hatchet fish until the tank is about 6 months old tbh.

They dont grow too big and ive had them in a 60liter tank without too much trouble

Hope this helps

I have mine in a 90L tank and they're very active so I wouldn't put them in anything smaller, tbh. Smile
