| I have Moss Balls in my tank too. As well as being decorative, they help to keep the nitrate level down and the fish/shrimp seem to like picking at them. | |

| Do these things take root, or do they just float about in the tank - not sure whether to get some or not? How many do you put in a tank? | |

| You can add as many as you like, Fishfan. I have 2-3 in the larger tanks and just one in the smaller tanks. They tend to get rolled about by the fish but don't put down roots and they stay on the bottom of the tank. | |

| They are weird little things - they were bobbing all over the tank like things demented when I did my water changes last night | |

| Just make sure you give them a good squeezing in a bit of old tank water before dropping them in otherwise they bob about on the surface and will freak him out | |

| OK - every so often - moss balls float to the surface for a while before dropping back down tot he substrate again. Something to do with gas exchange or something.
Anyway - they dont make roots as such - and float about - i did have some and have ordered some to replace them.
They are great for soaking up nitrates and phosphates - thus preventing algae from benefitting - although technically moss balls are algae.
Anwya - if elvis doesnt like them - they are cheap and disposable and you can probably sell them to someone on here | |
