'L' Numbers originated with a German Fish Magazine as a means of identifiying plecs that were not yet described. Even though many now have both scientific and common names the 'L' system remains the most popular and reliable way of identifying plecs - especially the rarer ones.

The best sources of catfish and plec information are other forums: planetcatfish, plecofanatics, l-welse (in German) scotcat and others.

I am not even going to try cover every 'L' no. on here (there are about 450 and rising) but I will add some info on more commonly seen plecs soon.
