Well I'm off on a week's holidays from Saturday so did water changes on ALL the tanks today - postponed for a few days as the water won't be changed again until Sunday week. It's a good idea to do the water change 1-2 days before you leave - and not on the morning of departure - just to make sure that all filters and heating are operating properly.
So I have premeasured food for all six tanks into clean bottle tops so all my neighbour has to do is empty one bottle top into each tank on Tuesday and again on Thursday. It's a good idea to cut down on feeding while you're away to keep the water quality as good as possible. I know of some people who don't have the fish fed at all while they're away for 1-2 weeks but I couldn't do that to them.
The only thing now is to plug the lights of the Q tank into a timer as I recently added plants there and also put the airpumps on timers to make sure there's plenty of oxygenation in the tank if - God forbid! - the filters failed...
Anyway, I'm going to show my neighbour how to check that the filters are working and also to check the thermometer every morning. I know going away should be a relaxing time but I bet I'll just fret about my fish while I'm away...
Btw, one drawback to having so many pets - it costs a FORTUNE to kennel them all...
