My fantail goldfish has a funny habit of hovering at a 45 degree angle with its nose down and tail up, just staying perfectly still near the top of the tank. As soon as I approach the tank, it rights itself and saunters off. Now I have noticed that part of its tail is missing and has been for quite a while but it doesn't seem to have affected its swimming ability. It's also eating fine and doesn't show any sign of illness. So do you think that this angled hovering is just a quirky thing that it does 'coz I haven't come across it in the tropical fish? Wink

It might be finding it hard to stay level because it doesn't have a full tail! But i have never heard of that before. Very Happy

Why would some of its tail be missing Mary?

My fantail does something similar Mary, but not for any length of time though.

She also plays dead sometimes and puts the fear of God in me!

No idea. I noticed it a couple of months ago so I don't know if it got caught in something or whether it was always like that.

That's ok then. It's obviously habit then. Smile

Well this is how the fantail looks in its head down, tail up position. As I said, it can swim fine but prefers to "rest" like this. Someone suggested to me that it might be constipated so I'm going to try some peas. Wink

Looks a fairly healthy fishy Mary. Does it stay like that for long periods?

It will do no harm to give it veggies, I do, as well as sometimes taking a few of the floating plants from my trops and chucking them in the Goldies tank for them to nibble on. The fantail seems to love them and doesnt appear to be suffering any ill effects from it.

It does, doesn't it? I've no idea how long it stays like that as the tank is in my daughter's bedroom but it seems like everytime I walk into the room, it's in that position. What veg. do you feed the goldies?
