APPEARANCE
The Bolivian Ram is similar in shape to its cousin the Blue Ram but is slightly larger and also significantly duller in colour. Despite this, it is the hardier of the two species and is a peaceful, robust addition to a general community aquarium.

The Bolivian Ram has a silvery grey body accented with yellow and a disinctive vertical stripe running through the eye area. It has a high dorsal fin with separated fin rays, the first of which are black in colour and are raised when intimadating other fish. The dorsal and caudal fins are edged in red and there is attractive blue speckling on the pelvic fin. In times of stress, there is dark vertical banding present and the yellow and red colouration intensifies when ready to breed. Sexing the species is difficult but, in general, the female is smaller than the male.

SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS
As with all rams, the Bolivian Ram is very specific about water chemistry, requiring soft, neutral to slightly acidic water to thrive. It is very sensitive to changes in water chemistry andd therefore it is important that a regular water change regimen is maintained.

The Bolivian Ram prefers a well lit aquarium that has plenty of hiding spots among wood, rocks and plants. A gentle water current is also preferred.

COMPATIBILITY
These fish are usually kept in pairs, but they also get on well with several of their own kind. They can be mixed with other species of rams such as the Blue Ram and its colour variant, the Gold Ram.

If mixing ram species however, it is important to ensure that there is enough territory to satisfy each species otherwise intensive bickering and territorial disputes may ensue.

DIETARY NEEDS
The Bolivian Ram is not a fussy eater and will readily accept dry flake, brine shrimp and bloodworms. It may even occasionally nibble at any vegetable matter put in the tank for bottom dwellers. It will also eat specialist cichlid tablets.
