Okay, first dumb question! I got a tank that had most things included for tropical fish. Only thing is, how much of what do I need to put in? I have Aqua Plus and Cycle but no instructions. I'm just setting up and just about filled with H2O. 60l tank. fish

Well the most important thing is to make sure your tank is cycled before adding the fish i.e that the proper filter bacteria are established. It's unfortunate how most people think fish keeping is simply a matter of popping a few fish in a tank and just leaving them to it...far from it! 90% of the work is involved in setting up the tank and if you get that much right, you're off to a good start. Here's a few links to keep you busy. Have a read of these two articles and if you need anything clarified, ask more questions on here. Smile

Thanks Mary, I'll read those in a mo. Yes, agree with you on the set-up. I was a bit concerned about the mucky gravel. Don't think I've seen gravel so mucky!

I've got the gravel, ornaments, plants, filter and heater in. I've not plugged the heater in yet. I'll give it a half hour or so to get aquainted with the tank. Not used a heater before as only had Goldfish.

I must say it's looking lovely already, without the fish! Very Happy

Couple of weeks you think?

Hiya h20, and a big welcome to the forum.

The time it takes to do the fishless cycle varies from tank to tank, but about 3 weeks is about average, unless you know someone who had an established tank, in which case get soime of the mucky stuff from their filter, which contains loads of the essential bacteria you need, and can shorten the cycle time dramatically.

You could always ask your lfs (local fish shop) for some of their gunk. Just make sure forst tat they havent had any illnesses in the system first and that would be ok.

If not then it's just a matter of patience, but it does give you time to get your tanks design sorted and have a think about what fish you want.

Thanks. I'm not sure I want to ask the aquatic man for some of his gunk! Smile

I'm not sure what fish. I like the ones that shoal.

Well 60 litres isnt a bad size, and you could have some harlequin rasboras, cherry barbs or something like that. They like to be kept in groups so you get half a dozen or so.

You'll hav time while doing the cycle to do a bit of looking round to see what you like, and then check on here if they are ok for a tank your size if you like

Thanks Fishfan. I'd quite like an assortment of the shoaling ones, top tank fish and the ones that you have to look for that like to hide (oh, so technical! Smile ).

That's the best mix, H2O as it means there's something at all tank levels. Smile
