Plattys are not shoaling fish and so can be kept in small numbers. The only thing I would mention is that I have found that the male platty can get aggressive to other male plattys in the tank. If you get a male/female combo, get more than 1 female - the single female will be harassed by the male to breed.

The other thing is that if you do get male/females you will have fry at some time. Have some idea what you want to do with them. I have a small spare tank that I use for raising the fry before I take them down to the lfs so perhaps that might be something you want to do Very Happy

A couple of females though would probably be fine, and they are a colourful fish too!

The male platy has a modified anal fin called a gonopodium. It's narrow and pointed whereas the fin is fan shaped in the female.

Is it likely that the female plattys could be pregnant when you buy them. I have read this about guppies, but dont know if it applies to all female fish Smile

It just applies to livebearers such as platies, guppies, mollies and swordtails to name but a few. If you don't want to be overrun with fry, just have single sex. I have a pair of male platies in one tank and a pair of female swordtails in the other that are great pals and have never given me any bother. Alternatively, if you do want to breed them, have a ratio of at least 1 male to 3 females so that the male can spread his "affection"...Wink
