any suggestions? :?: Plattys are not shoaling fish and so can be kept in small numbers. The only thing I would mention is that I have found that the male platty can get aggressive to other male plattys in the tank. If you get a male/female combo, get more than 1 female - the single female will be harassed by the male to breed. The other thing is that if you do get male/females you will have fry at some time. Have some idea what you want to do with them. I have a small spare tank that I use for raising the fry before I take them down to the lfs so perhaps that might be something you want to do A couple of females though would probably be fine, and they are a colourful fish too! | |

| The male platy has a modified anal fin called a gonopodium. It's narrow and pointed whereas the fin is fan shaped in the female. | |

| Is it likely that the female plattys could be pregnant when you buy them. I have read this about guppies, but dont know if it applies to all female fish |

| It just applies to livebearers such as platies, guppies, mollies and swordtails to name but a few. If you don't want to be overrun with fry, just have single sex. I have a pair of male platies in one tank and a pair of female swordtails in the other that are great pals and have never given me any bother. Alternatively, if you do want to breed them, have a ratio of at least 1 male to 3 females so that the male can spread his "affection"... | |
