| I have only had him 3 weeks. but he's grown about a inch in that time both in length and width if he keeps going at this rate Elvis wants a very large tank for christmas..lol he is now very tame, nosey, and watches everyone in the house. i had visitors yesturday but he shyed away for a while. but was ok when they had been in the house about half a hour and he had a good nosey at them.lol i love this fish he is so intellegent. if anyone is thinking of getting 1 i would say go for it. alot friendlier than the usual community fishes. |

| I know Diane i can't believe the size of him in this short time. i love him to bits..lol he's so funny very very nosey. i had to do a water change again today ;o( the amonia was at the iffy stage.better safe than sorry. so i have changed about a quarter of the tank. i will test it tomorrow. i think its because i havan't a cat fish. i have gravel cleaned as well today. with my new cleaner from argos. i understand oscars like clean water. when i get the bigger tank i'm going to have just a large piece of bogwood in and thats all.and sand instead of gravel. i'm getting the fluvel 4 filter i have the fluval 3 now in the 3ft tank. and its a great filter. and a 12 inch airstone at the side of the tank i love to see bubbles. roll on christmas |

| Yoou will need to do a weekly water change even if you do have a catfish chez. Your lovely oscar is weeing and pooing all the time, and swimming round in his own little toilet, and as he grows he will be weeing and pooing even more.
All the wee and poo turns into ammonia and the amount will just get more and more until you change the water. Adding another fish into the mix = more wee and poo.
Your filter will convert some of it, but when the amount of ammonia gets too much for it, instead of it being converted, it just stays in the water and makes your fish ill.
A once a week water change, of about 1/3 of the water at a time, and a 50% gravel vac should keep the water nice and clean and ammonia free. | |

| Chez, I dont know if you have done this, but it's best to have some sort of routine for the fish (apologies if I am teaching granny to suck eggs here). Pick a day when you have the time to do the tank. I do mine on a Sunday, when the OH goes out for her run, its either that or she tries to get me to jog with her I check the water before I start just to check if there is any ammonia. I then do about a 40% water change, clean the inside of the glass, wash the filter pads, and do a 50% gravel vac and then refill the tank. Once a month I also remove ornaments and wood etc and gravel vac under them and give them a bit of a scrub in the tank water I have taken out, just to make sure no algae builds up too much. If the first water test has shown any ammonia (it never has), I would retest the water after the water change, and do another water change if there is a hint of ammonia still left. I am not sure why you are getting ammonia in your tank if you did the fishless cycle and only have one fish in the tank. If you are doing regular tank maintenaince this shouldn't happen I dont think | |

| it doesnt sound right that you have ammonia, agree with fishfan. What is your current tank cleaning regime?
Remember that ammonia has the same effect as acid on the fishes skin, so it is really important to keep the water really clean or you end up with a really sick fish. |

| Best water testing kit to look for chez is the API Masterkit. It's said to be the most accurate. I'm not sure how deep your tank is, but you need to remove about 1/3 of the water. If that is about 5" of water then that's great Sorry if you have been asked this before but what is the size of your tank? | |

| That gives you about 130litres (roughly), so you need to change about 40-45 litres every water change. If yoiu measure how much your bucket holds, you will know then how many buckets you need to remove/replace. easy-peasy! | |
