APPEARANCE
Silver Dollar
fish are basically a circular shape and when viewed from the front have quite a marked concave area near the dorsal and anal fins. Silvery grey in colour they have a noticeable iridescent sheen , with some greenish blue or greenish grey colouration on the back, as well a a narrow, dark vertical band that runs through each eye.
SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS
This is a large
fish, and so requires a suitably sized tank (see above), with lots of open swimming areas. Some recommend that there should be no live plants in the tank as they will get eaten by these
fish, but growing plants may also be a problem as subdued lighting is preferred by these
fish. Dark gravel and hiding places should be provided for them - bogwood, caves etc.
They are very sensitive to changes in water quality so tank maintenance must be a prime importance in their care..
Silver Dollars should be kept in groups of about 6 or 8, and with
fish of a similar size - they will eat any
fish smaller than them!
COMPATIBILITY
Despite being related to the pirhana, these are quite a peaceful
fish, and will be happy in a tank with other
fish as long as they are not small.
DIETARY NEEDS
These
fish will eat most things, flake, pellets, vegetables, bloodworm etc.
BREEDING
Dollare are not easy to breed. They need a large shallow tank with a ph of 6 - 6.5, low light and plenty of vegetation. Once the eggs have been laid and fertilised, it is best to remove the adults from the tank so that the eggs dont get eaten. Onve hatched the fry will live on plankton, but as they get bigger will easily take to crushed flake.
