Fish Of The Month Empty
PostSubject: Fish Of The Month   Fish Of The Month Icon_minitimeSun Jun 15, 2008 9:42 am

As suggested, i am announcing the fish of the month! What we will do is cycle each month through different families of fish and feature a different fish each month. After each month the info sheet will be moved to the profiles section and a new fish will be featured. This is great for discovering new fish that you didn't know existed! If you have any fish recommendations you can PM me

SILVER DOLLAR

Fish Of The Month April_silver_dollar7_320

Type: Tropical Freshwater

Scientific Name: Metynnis Argentus
Maximum Size: 20cm
Minimum Tank Volume: 300L
Minimum Tank Width: 48"
Water pH: 6.0-7.5
Water Temperature: 25 - 28C

Care Rating: Moderate

APPEARANCE
Silver Dollar fish are basically a circular shape and when viewed from the front have quite a marked concave area near the dorsal and anal fins. Silvery grey in colour they have a noticeable iridescent sheen , with some greenish blue or greenish grey colouration on the back, as well a a narrow, dark vertical band that runs through each eye.

SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS
This is a large fish, and so requires a suitably sized tank (see above), with lots of open swimming areas. Some recommend that there should be no live plants in the tank as they will get eaten by these fish, but growing plants may also be a problem as subdued lighting is preferred by these fish. Dark gravel and hiding places should be provided for them - bogwood, caves etc.

They are very sensitive to changes in water quality so tank maintenance must be a prime importance in their care..

Silver Dollars should be kept in groups of about 6 or 8, and with fish of a similar size - they will eat any fish smaller than them!

COMPATIBILITY
Despite being related to the pirhana, these are quite a peaceful fish, and will be happy in a tank with other fish as long as they are not small.

DIETARY NEEDS
These fish will eat most things, flake, pellets, vegetables, bloodworm etc.

BREEDING
Dollare are not easy to breed. They need a large shallow tank with a ph of 6 - 6.5, low light and plenty of vegetation. Once the eggs have been laid and fertilised, it is best to remove the adults from the tank so that the eggs dont get eaten. Onve hatched the fry will live on plankton, but as they get bigger will easily take to crushed flake.

Scientific Name: Crossocheilus siamensis

Common Names: SAE. Not to be confused with the Flying Fox (Epalzeorhynchus kalopterus - "false" SAE) or Chinese Algae Eater (Gyrinocheilus aymonieri - Sucking Loach). The SAE is distinguished by having just one black and one white horizontal stripe whereas the Flying Fox has one black and two white horizontal stripes and the CAE has brown patches and a more aggressive nature.

Distribution: A member of the Cyprinid family, the SAE is native to Thailand and the Malay Peninsula.

Sexual Dimorphism: Difficult to sex but the females are fatter than the males and look more rounded when viewed overhead.

Adult Size: Up to 15cm.

Water Parameters: These fish prefer soft to medium hard water conditions and a pH of 6.5-8.0.

Temperature: 24 - 26 deg C (75 - 79 deg F).

Care: The SAE will adapt to a wide range of tank conditions but prefers a densely planted aquarium that also has open areas for swimming. Although they will consistently graze the algae from plants, they do not eat or damage the plants themselves. However, they may nibble on the roots of floating plants from time to time. They prefer a good oxygenation rate so a reasonable filter flow is essential.

Social Characteristics: The SAE is often considered to be the best all-round algae eater available as, unlike other algae eaters such as Otos or Bristlenose Plecs, the SAE tackles almost all forms of algae and is constantly grazing. It is almost as industrious as Otos but requires a larger tank (at least 100L) due to its eventual size. Although it can be kept in groups, it also does fine as a single individual. It is an active, fast swimmer and will sink to the bottom of the tank if it stops swimming! It is a strong jumper so requires a covered tank.

Feeding: While they are industrious algae eaters, the SAE will happily accept all types of fish food - dry flake, live foods, algae tabs. etc. They also appreciate supplemental vegetable to their diet especially cucumber and courgette.

Breeding: Difficult.
